We have been taught that Christ is the First-born of God, and we have declared above that He is the Logos [Divine
Intelligence, Principle, Word) of whom every race of humans were partakers; and those who lived reasonably
are Christians, even though they have been thought atheists; as, among the Greeks, Socrates and Heraclitus, and people
like them…. And those of the Stoic school – since, so far as their moral teaching went, they were admirable, as were also
the poets in some particulars, on account of the seed of the Logos implanted in every race of humans…. For each person
spoke well in proportion to the share they had of the seed of the Logos, seeing what was related to It…. Whatever things
were rightly said among all people, are the property of us Christians… For all the writers were able to see realities darkly
through the sowing of the implanted Logos that was in them.
-Justin Martyr (d. 165 A.D.)
