“We cannot be healed, we can’t be healers, we cannot be a community of healers if we aren’t curious.” – Rev. Matt Russell

Join us as we gather to see, hear and honor the foundation and founders of an important part of our city, established around Faith, Family and Community.

We will begin at the Prayer Garden on the former grounds of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church where we will hear Mrs. Lue Williams share her story as long a lifelong member and deacon and have an opportunity to walk the labyrinth.

Next we will walk around the corner to the Gregory School, the first public education institution for African American children in Houston and has been designated a State Archaeological Landmark. It houses Freedmen’s Town Gallery, chronicling a period when the African American community was established following emancipation. Also, there is a restored replica of a classroom and an art exhibit.

After our visit to the Gregory School, we will walk the brick streets laid by first residents of Freedmen’s Town, and conclude with lunch and our own personal reflections at Bethel Park, the site of the former Bethel Baptist Church.
