Gastrochurch

Welcome to gastrochurch. We do intentional conversations about spiritual things over really good food. We set a table and invite people from any background, culture, worldview, and identity. It’s kind of a mashup between a dinner party and a small group, only with people you might otherwise never meet.

Here’s how it works: when you show up, you’ll sit at a table of six with people you may or may not know. Over the course of the evening, we’ll give you three questions, meant to get you talking about something more substantive than the weather. You spend about 90 minutes eating, drinking, talking, laughing, connecting, and potentially meeting your new best friend. And then you go home and tell everyone how awesome it was and how you can’t wait to come to the next gathering.

Texas residents are not strangers to natural disasters. This time of year carries with it memories of past storms which have devastated homes and neighborhoods. Anyone who’s lived here long enough probably has a story to tell of how they were impacted by a hurricane or other natural disaster. For some, their stories are still being written. We have neighbors right here who are still rebuilding their homes and searching for hope until healing and restoration comes.

The Restoration Team (TRT) is a home repair and disaster response nonprofit here in Houston dedicated to assisting families whose homes were damaged in hurricanes, floods, or other natural disasters. TRT helps coordinate the volunteer response with the needs of families, primarily focusing on bringing the damaged home to a functional living condition.

Join us for our next gastrochurch experiences focused on social issues of vulnerability, in partnership with The Center for Christian Spirituality.

This month we will gather at Westminster United Methodist Church, with our friends from The Restoration Team to share a three course meal and discuss what restoration looks like in our homes, in our lives and in our communities.
